The number of alumni (individuals who have received Harvard degrees) is difficult to determine, one reason being that some individuals have received multiple degrees. The more available number is that of degrees conferred, as follows:

The number of degrees conferred by Harvard in all schools from 1642 (the first graduating class) to 2009, as reported in the Quinquennial Catalogue, Annual Reports, and Fact Books, is close to 423,331.

This does not include most honorary degrees after 1929, so another 800 or so can be added to that number.

(Use information from the annual Fact Books (linked below) to update this total calculated in 2009.)

Quinquennial Catalogue (summary of degrees up to 1929)

Harvard Presidents' Annual Reports (see the Degrees Conferred appendix for each year from 1930 to 1986)
